One MSc course in four countriesby Martin Schlerf |
Four renowned European institutes formed a consortium and offer a unique Master of Science (MSc) course in Geo-information Science and Earth Observation for Environmental Modelling and Management (GEM).The course starts in September 2007 and takes 18 months. It is run sequentially by the University of Southampton (United Kingdom), Lund University (Sweden), the University of Warsaw (Poland), and the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation ITC (the Netherlands).
The GEM programme combines the best elements from these institutes into one course. World renowned faculty from the four Universities, as well as visiting scholars, teach this course. The course is organised in 15 modules, all linked through the common geo-information and environment theme. The modules are given in three of the four institutes sequentially: participants start at Southampton University, where they stay for 17 weeks, then move to Lund University for 19 weeks, and finally study at ITC for 42 weeks, which includes the modules given by the University of Warsaw and fieldwork abroad.
What will you gain?Students are taught by staff of international repute to apply solid theoretical knowledge as well as the latest technology and techniques to real-world case studies. The programme integrates skills from a variety of disciplines - including environmental science, remote sensing and GIS - with management and policy.
Why choose this programme? This Master of Science course provides excellent qualifications for employment at research institutes, in government, in companies, as well as in public-private partnerships. More importantly, it provides a sound theoretical and practical basis for those who wish to contribute to sustainable change.
Who can apply? The programme is particularly attractive to those who have recently graduated from a university with a Bachelors degree in agriculture, forestry, geography, geo-information science, geology, water resources, natural resources, rural and environmental planning or a related topic or are already employed in the field. Applications for full fee paying students can be submitted until 1 July 2007. The tuition fee for European citizens is EUR 3750. European students participating in the GEM MSc are entitled to receive a Socrates fellowship and a Partnership Fellowship.
